The idea of niching down on something isn’t a new one. It’s the best thing to do when you’re in business. However, I think it’s also valid when It comes to the social media platforms you use.
Many would argue that niching down on one particular topic is the best thing to do when running your business.
And others say being a generalist often is better because you can offer different things to your clients.
I would say there are pluses and minuses on both sides. If you niche down, you know who you're speaking to. You know who your clients are.
So attracting more traffic, and you would get more clients. It's also argued that you can charge more.
If you're a generalist, you can make your clients happier, but all your marketing materials and everything will be all over the place.
So you're trying to fish in a massive pool of people. And no one really knows what you're about.
But again, there are pluses and minuses to both.
And in the past couple of weeks, I've been back and forth about what I should be doing on social media.
And many people talk about niching down with your business, but no one really talks about niching down on your social media.
And what do I mean by that?
There are many different social media platforms. There's Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat etc.
But you've got to go where your clients are. You can't just go and use all of them.
I've been testing out whether I should be on all social media platforms.
Again, it could be good to be on multiple platforms because the more platforms you're on, the more people come to you.
However, I find a problem with that. When you are on social media, you should be interacting with other people.
So if you're on many different platforms, when do I have time to communicate and interact with everyone?
This idea of niching down on social media is not something that I've come up with. I've heard this from other people, but again,
there are pros and cons to both.
The two social media platforms that I'm constantly using are Twitter because I find fantastic people to converse with there. And LinkedIn, because that's where all the, all my clients are.
They're not on TikTok. They're not obviously on Snapchat. They're not on Instagram. They're not on these other platforms.
I think it would work for certain types of businesses. But if you're a coach and a consultant looking for other coaches and consultants to be your clients, I don't think it's a great idea or an efficient way to use your time.
Let's put it this way:
People who go on LinkedIn are specifically going there for work. Right?
People who are on TikTok and Instagram, they're looking for instant gratification. They're constantly scrolling. They're not going there for work.
So to waste time posting to all sorts of platforms, to me, is just wasting time.
The whole point of Tech Minimalism is to get rid of tech. And for the past two or three weeks, I've been adding tech. And it's giving me headaches. It's giving me anxiety.
Not because of the likes or anything.
Anxiety in a sense: I'm wasting too much time on platforms I don't need to be on. Where I could be focusing and niching down on the platforms that I truly believe do work.
So niching down on specific platforms, is I think, a good idea.
I'm still playing with this. So I'm going to stick out for another week or so.
So lean towards the social platforms that you're comfortable with that you can give your time to. And ones where your clients are.
It's pointless being everywhere.
